Tonysun portable paraffin heater

The Tonysun paraffin heater is a portable heater that works without mains power – ideal where electricity is limited or unavailable: a boat cabin, tent or caravan, a shed or workshop, or as emergency heating at home. It burns paraffin or kerosene and gives 15 to 17 hours of heat on one tank at the highest setting.

Operation and fuel

A glass-fibre wick draws fuel from the tank; glass fibre is heat resistant and wears far more slowly than cotton. Use purified paraffin/kerosene: it burns cleaner and almost odourless, which makes a real difference in a small cabin. A reflector directs part of the heat downwards to keep feet and legs warm.

Typical of this original Tonysun is the double fuel tank: if the heater tips over, the double-walled construction prevents fuel from spilling. The guard around the burner limits contact with hot parts, and the top plate keeps a kettle or pan warm.

• Always ventilate: a paraffin heater has open combustion and uses oxygen. Keep a window or hatch ajar.
• Fit a carbon monoxide alarm in any enclosed space.
• Light and extinguish the heater outside where possible; most odour is released then.
• Place on a flat, stable, non-flammable surface away from curtains and flammable materials.
• Adjust the flame height if the heater smells; use clean, purified fuel.
