A mooring line is the line that ties a boat to the shore, jetty or mooring post. Twisted or braided, and which diameter?

A laid line is supple, easy to splice yourself and stretches slightly, absorbing snatch loads on bollards and cleats. Polypropylene is light, floats and is comfortable in the hand. Rule of thumb: the longer and heavier the boat, the thicker the line. Small open boats and sloops use the thinner sizes, cabin boats the middle sizes and larger yachts the thickest. A mooring line should be at least about two thirds of the boat length; springs need more.
